The waters and reefs that take you to Caveira beach have many stories to tell. The beach's name comes from the tragic disaster of the transatlantic ship Príncipe de Astúrias (Prince of Astúrias) that sank close to Pirabura Point in 1916, killing more than 600 people. Many of the bodies from the shipwreck were carried by the waves to the sands of this beach, which is more than 5 Km away from where the accident occurred.

In order to reach its sands by boat, the best way is to proceed right through the middle of the bay, crossing the waves' breaking point, since there are large submerged stones at both ends.

Although the reefs and their underwater vegetation make access to the 300-m stretch of sand somewhat difficult, on the other hand, they attract many fishes. Caveira beach is one of the most sought after spots on the Island by scuba divers who like underwater fishing.
